An old granite mine south-east of the OneCamp site has seen a lot of history since it was established in 1901.
OneCamp is now a part of that long history, with Mountain Quarry hosting the Discover New Heights activity.
‘We have rock climbing and abseiling for all skill levels,’ explains Mike, a Kalgoorlie Leader who was introducing Venturers to rock activities.
He describes youth members quickly building their confidence in rock climbing. Scouts who struggled kept coming back to the cliff face, determined to reach the top.
A few of them even braved the Big Kahuna, a staggering 50m long abseil.
‘I had done indoor rock climbing before, but never climbed on an actual cliff,’ said Bailey, a Wembley Downs Venturer from B09.
‘It was a lot harder than it looks, but fun.’
‘Even if you’re scared, have a go anyway.’
Jay from THE ONECAMP DAILY watched in amazement as Hailey, a Dianella Venturer also from B09, effortlessly abseiled down a nearby rockface.
It was Hailey’s first time abseiling on a natural surface, and she described the feeling as if she was flying.
